Woman gives birth to triplets

Vanitha, a housewife from Uleppady, Purunjigudde in Mangalore taluk came across as a tired woman resting in one of the beds at the Government Lady Goschen Hospital here on Saturday. She had all the reason to be so, for just 24 hours ago, Vanitha joined a list of select few women who have given birth to triplets. Her triple bundle of joy kept Vanitha company at the bedside as she recovered from the delivery blues.

Wife of Prabhakar, who works in a restaurant at Ullal, Vanitha already has Pranamya, a three-year-old daughter. Nature however worked in its own mysterious way to grant this couple three children - all boys in her second pregnancy. The infants came out none too worse for Vanitha - weighing in at a healthy 2.4-kgs, 2.2-kgs and 1.9-kgs respectively, leaving her with a sense of relief and also a sense of trepidation at her future.

In fact, this was not exactly a total surprise for the couple, who came to know of this triple joy awaiting them, when Vanitha came for a regular check up in the 27th week of her pregnancy. However, little Pranamya appeared a bit concerned at this development in her life and chose to stick to her grandmother all the while, casting nervous glances at the new borns, two of whom rested in the cradle and one beside the mother.

The hospital staff including M M Shakunthala, medical superintendent of Lady Goschen Hospital were all happy at this rather uncommon occurrence in their professional lives. Prajna, in charge of ''A'' unit where Vanitha was admitted, performed a caesarean section surgery on Friday. She did not want to take any risk to wait for a normal delivery as triplets were involved.
