GPs will provide quality drinking water to schools: CEO Shivashankar

Mangalore :  Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayath Shivashankar announced that the stand-alone water purification system has been implemented in 70 GP schools under DK’s drinking water scheme for 2009 – 10 at the cost of Rs. 10.80 lakh. He was speaking to reporters during “Meet the Press” programme held at Press Club on July 31, Saturday. Mr. Shivashankar also said that the government has earmarked a sum of Rs. 17.97 lakh for water purifiers to be installed in 164 schools.

Explaining the matter further, he said that Mangalore and Bantwal face severe water shortage problems in the months of February, March, and April, owing to which Rs. 2.5 crore will be invested on solutions to water problems. The Gram Panchayats will work to provide not only quantity, but also quality water, he said.

A total of 127 GPs have completed the task of metering, and the system will be implemented in all other GPs, he said and informed that the GPs have for the first time implemented the system of double entry through software called “Panchatantra.” The public can obtain full information regarding GPs, their populations, assets, and other information at a website called Panchamitra, he said. 

Mr. Shivashankar also said that 203 GPs have received “Nirmal Puraskar” for cleanliness. Besides, Belthangady, Puttur, and Bantwal have also received this award.

The GPs are looking forward to work on solid waste management, land filling, and vermin filling. The people of the GPs will receive Rs. 63,500 under the Basava Indira Housing Schemes to construct houses. Of this, 35,000 is being contributed by the central government, 15,000 by the state government, and Rs. 10,000 by banks, he informed.

President of DK District Working Journalists’ Association Harsha presided over the programme. Press Club General Secretary P. B. Harish Rai made the welcome speech and proposed the vote of thanks. Guruvappa T Balepuni, secretary of Press Club was present.
