Mangalorean girl bags medals at Asian Roller Skating Championship

Mangalore , Saturday, July 31, 2010 : Mangalorean Sharanya Mahesh has returned with two medals for the country from the 14th Asian Roller Skating Championship held in Taipei, China, from July 19 to 25.

More than 15 countries had participated in this mega event. She bagged 2 bronze medals in the women above 17 years category in 3X3000 and 3X5000 Relay.

Sharanya is the daughter of Mahesh Kumar, Coach, Roller Skating Club, and Sonia. She has been practising skating since the age of 5. Presently, she is perusing her Science degree in St Aloysius College, Mangalore.

Speaking to media persons at the Press Club on Friday, July 30, Mahesh said that all her expenses were borne by them, and that they neither had any sponsors nor was there any help from government. The Tamil Nadu government has announced Rs 1 lakh to the winner hailing from their state, he said.

To encourage the sport in Mangalore, a new stadium for roller skating near Kadri would be started, he informed.

Jessi D’Souza, Convener, Mangalore Roller Skating Club, said that when they approached a few banks requesting for sponsorship, they denied giving it citing lack of crowd for this sport. Finally an MLA rendered some monetary help, she revealed.
