Rain havoc in Udupi: 60 families shifted to rehabilitation centres

Udupi ,  Saturday, July 31, 2010 :  As the heavy rains continued to lash out in Udupi district, 25 houses were damaged; over 60 families were shifted to the ganji kendras and other nearby houses to the high lying places.

The loss suffered in the Friday rains has been estimated at Rs 2.5 lakhs.

Udyavara River over flooded on Friday morning. As a result 35 families with 60 members from Udyavara village were shifted to the ganji Kendra opened by the district administration at Government PU College, Udyavara. 25 more families with 40 members in Kote village were shifted to the ganji kendras opened at Kote Grama Panchayath premises. Three more families from the inundated low lying areas were shifted to the nearby houses. 

Due to incessant rains Houses of one Venkatesh Jogi in Hangalur of Kundapura taluk and Krishna Poojary of Neelavara, near Brahmavara completely collapsed. The loss has been estimated at Rs 38,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively.

Deputy Commissioner of Udupi P Hemalatha visited the inundated areas of Uppur, near Brahmavar. Uppur, Heroor, Kalyanapura, Kemmannu, Mabukala, Barkur, Kollalgiri, Alevoor, Kodangala, Heerebettu, Kaup Forest gate near Katpady, low laying areas in Shirva have been inundated.

Fire Service personnel claimed to have rescued as many as 93 persons and 17 cattle from the fear of washing out in the rain. As wooden log which came floating in the flood blocked water flowing area of a vented dam in Kemthur village, the footpath got sub merged in the flood. Locals helped the students in passing the bridge to reach their school.
