Mock funeral procession to protest against the non-functioning of the cold storage facility

Report by Mangaloremithr Team

Udupi ,  Thursday, July 29, 2010 :  Members of the Udupi Zilla Nagarika Samiti on Wednesday took out a mock funeral procession to protest against the non-functioning of the cold storage facility at the mortuary in District Government Hospital here.

The procession, which began from the Taluk Office, went to the District Government Hospital and culminated near the Deputy Commissioner''s Office.

General secretary of the samiti and municipal councillor Nityananda Volakadu said that as the cold storage facility had not been functioning since nearly two years, there was no place to store unclaimed bodies.

People who want to store bodies had to no choice but to approach private hospitals in Manipal where they had to pay a hefty fee, he said.

The breakdown of the cold storage facility at the District Government Hospital''s mortuary had resulted in hardship to both the poor and the police. Though the samiti had brought the matter to the notice of Health Department authorities, the facility had not been repaired so far, Mr. Volakadu said.

Members of the samiti submitted a memorandum in this regard to the district authorities.
District Surgeon Dayananda Nayak said that there were two cold storage units at the mortuary in the District Government Hospital and both stopped functioning a year-and-a-half ago.

Each cold storage unit could accommodate two bodies. The hospital had urged the Directorate of Health in Bangalore to take steps to get them repaired. The directorate sent a team of technicians about eight months ago which opined that only one unit could be repaired.

Accordingly, the Arogya Raksha Samiti gave its approval for repairing the unit which would cost Rs. 8,000. The other unit would have to be replaced, Dr. Nayak said.

Both these units were provided to the hospital nearly 11 years ago under the Karnataka Health Systems Development Project, he said.
