Lent - A chance to overhaul one’s life
George D’ Souza, Orlem (Mumbai)
As a professional in automobile field, I address various issues – from system breakdowns to preventive maintenance for various make and models of cars. There, in my workshop, I recommend many measures, for an efficient running of these machines. But at times I recommend a complete overhauling of some of these run down cars- their engine, mechanical and body shell to bring them back to good working condition.

Suicide by Young Children - A Disturbing Trend
George D’Souza, Mumbai
It is very disturbing to read news reports about young children committing suicides. Fast opinion seems to point at excessive stress due to studies-which may be the main reason. But that does not end there. The parents have to go through unimaginable trauma till they live. No parents can withstand the shock of losing a child, after all every parent tries to give best to their children and look forward for good results from them.

Rent-A-Womb, a Thriving Business
Courtesy: CNS
‘Surrogate Babies, not Commodities: Says the Supreme Court’, ‘Twins of German Couple Land in No Man’s Land’, and ‘Rent-a-womb Takes Wing in the City’ are a few of the stories that have recently appeared in the Indian press. They all refer to the same issue, namely how foreign couples are flocking to India for in-vitro fertilisation and womb rental. In turn, this is raising many questions among doctors, government officials and legal experts about the nationality of surrogate children in an area where there are no rules.

Harmony and Love
By: Deeksha Mangalore
Maintaining harmony under all circumstances is the key to navigating through life.
By remaining calm and composed in each moment, we keep life in perspective. We are
able to connect with the bigger picture of potential while sorting out appropriate
courses of action to address any situation before us. We can release our attachments
and reactions knowing that they are only a small part of the experience. Harmony
reveals the presence of love.

Your brain - Use it, or lose it?
By: Patrick Braggs
The brain is a very complex device, still yet to be fully understood. However we
know that certain parts of the brain undergo a rapid growth period in the first
ten or so years. This is why early childhood development is so important, its sets
us up for the rest of our lives. During our early years our brain is like a sponge,
we are trying new things and experiencing many things for the first time.

Safety Tips for children
By: Deeksha Mangalore
Parents, guardians, and adults who care for children face constant challenges when
trying to help keep children safer in today''s fast-paced world. For decades, children
were taught to stay away from "strangers." But this concept is difficult for children
to grasp and often the perpetrator is someone the child knows. It is more beneficial
to help build children''s confidence and teach them to respond to a potentially
dangerous situation, rather than teaching them to look out for a particular type
of person.

it by traveling in a train.

this kind of mentality has been passed on to our kids, and that they are finding

Missing Role of Education in Teaching Communal Harmony
by: Kiran kumar, Mangalore
Secularism has been the hallmark of India from time immemorial. She has been the
tower of tolerance. Many a religion has been flowered and flourished in her soil.
They have spread their fragrance of their spirituality all over the world. Apart
from this she also readily accepted the new religions and cultures that came to
her. All of them have flowered and flourished in India. In the process they have
enriched her culture and heritage. They have lived side by side for centuries together
in harmony and peace. All though there have been instances of communal violence
in the history, they have not affected the integrity of the country.

And God said “There shall be no food!”
By: Royston Fernandes
Most people who know me, often remark: “Roy, you should eat properly. You are too
thin!” To all of them I say-“Ok...”, but then deep down my voice means to say “I
don’t like eating!”
I was in high school then, was thin and lean like now, and was a bit too selective
when it came to food. You should have seen my plate then, a little rice left untouched,
coconut present in the vegetable dish sorted beautifully at one corner, the onions,
the garlic, the ginger at the other...all of which went into the drain, to waste.

Sleeping less than seven or eight hours a night as a routine puts people at risk
for high blood pressure, a study found.
The less the adults participating in the research slept, the more likely they were
to see their blood pressure rise, according to research published in yesterday’s
Archives of Internal Medicine. For every hour of missed sleep, odds of developing
the condition rose an average 37 percent over five years, said Kristen Knutson,
the lead author. Skipping two hours sleep raised the blood pressure risk 86 percent.

MEDIA MUST SET TREND FOR LAWFUL PROTESTS
|
|
|
Fr.MELVIN PINTO
MANGALORE
|
|
|
|
It is becoming a trend of sorts. In the last four months we have had four instances
of public display of protest. What is unusual about this development is in each
of these cases footwear has been hurled at prominent dignitaries and in two of the
four cases involved people from the media.
The first instance took place on December 14, 2008. Muntazar al-Zaidi, an Iraqui
journalist for an Egyptian newspaper hurled both his shoes at no less a leader than
the then US President, George W. Bush for his alleged attempts to destroy Iraq.
Then on February 2, 2009 a 27-year old unnamed person threw his shoe at Chinese
premier, Ben Jiabo while the later was lecturing at Cambridge University.
The third instance happened in India at New Delhi on April 7. Jarnail Singh, a correspondent
of Dainik Jagran protested through similar manner at the press conference of Home
Minister, P. Chidambaram. His reasons? As a Sikh he was upset, along with scores
of Sikh brethren, at CBI giving a clean chit to Jagadeesh Tytler and Sajjan Kumar
who allegedly had a hand in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The most recent case of shoe-throwing
took place on April 10. A retired schoolteacher hurled a shoe at Congress MP Naveen
Jindal while he was campaigning at a rally in Kurukshetra constituency.
While the first two shoe-throwers have been detained and cases filed against them,
the latter two have been lucky in this election year to go without any case.
While the validity of the issues for which these people have been protesting is
unquestionable. It is the manner in which they have chosen to protest that raises
serious questions. It is true that Iraq war, anti-Sikh riots etc. were no minor
issues. It is also true that prominent leaders were involved in those mayhem. Despite
all that, one cannot indulge in unacceptable protests. It is sad that two cases
involved media persons. Media, by definition, cannot resort to raking up passions
while reporting. They are called to be objective as far as possible. If this is
true, then those taking up the task of reporting have to work against their personal
issues and see the larger good of society. Otherwise, they are unfit to be journalists.
It amounts to journalists too becoming communal and partisan which will be an unfortunate
development. What these journalists will do, without their awareness, is that they
will only bring disrepute to their profession and to the whole media fraternity.
Media must set trend for lawful protests.

MIA CASA ……… ON THE BRINK OF DISASTER
‘The Rome of East’, indeed it is!
I have known this Rome since my birth and I am proud being a Mangalorean. Due to
the growth curve in Mangalore, people are vying for places of comfort and are ready
to shell out any amount for a piece of land in Mangalore that will give them solace.
I grew up with peace and serenity around and was lucky to be born in this part of
the globe. There was linen of love wrapped round my world and a string of unity
beaded with communal harmony. There was joy everywhere and the Mangalorean took
pleasure in small things be it religious festivities, harvest or any other local
festivals. There was no tussle in the name of religion. People shared a bond that
surpassed all difficulties. The crime rate was low and the people then were god
fearing and devout. ‘Mia Casa’ was unaware of the term ‘terrorism’. My home was
aloof of violence.
Sad to say that things are not the same any longer. Yes, my nest is on the verge
of being devoured. Believe me, it is! With the number of crimes soaring the skies,
can I any longer call my home a paradise? Well, I can still call it a ‘fool’s paradise’!
(Howzat?). The communal riot that hit my Mangalore shook me and I am sure it did
have the similar effect on several others too. There arose million questions and
have remained unanswered till day. Ultimately, it was the innocent and the common
man who paid an unfair price. But who was to voice for them and who would? (But
for the media that rocks!!!)
It was on one of these days that I rode up to one of the places of attack, as I
parked my vehicle, I caught a familiar face. I went up to her at the corner; I could
see how hurt she was. It was then the ‘NDTV’ news reporter approached me and asked
me a few set of questions and they went all live on television. One of the questions
that she put forth was, “What do you ultimately have to say to all that has occurred?”
All that I could say was, “This is sheer injustice! This is not only the battle
between two groups but the battle of the innocent and the common man for survival.
The authorities must take the necessary action and I pray for justice ……” Does that
sound diplomatic?
Every other day I read in the news bulletin, the arrest made on terrorists in Mangalore.
‘In Mangalore’! Is the exclamation initially expressed in disbelief by most of the
people. ‘Terrorists’ and 'Naxals’ in Mangalore strange but true.
On one of my visits to ‘The Hindu’ office to submit an article to the local supplement,
my friend a sales officer caught a glimpse of this very article that you are reading.
The distress that he let out was, “These terrorists in our land are young and qualified.
Is there something lacking in our system of education? “Terrorists in Mangalore’
sounds not only dangerous but is also a hindrance to our city. Since Mangalore is
growing city terrorism is a black mark to us.”
Yes! This is certainly affecting us from every angle. This is suffocating our children.
It is cutting out a ‘sorry figure’.
What is happening to this piece of land? With all the trash that is taking place,
are we still asleep? Are we waiting for a major blow to crash us? Our so called
‘leaders’ and ‘democrats’ are simply clumsy in their attempts. Once the fire’s out,
the whole matter’s also out.
“Mia Casa’ is endangered and is in need of serious help. Save my home before it
breaks. Come to its aid before its late………
