His contribution to Konkani is immensely valuable |
|
|
Indeed, delighted to learn that Eric Ozario, the founder of Mandd Sobhann would
be celebrating his 60th birthday on May 18! On this occasion, I congratulate him
and wish him many happier returns of the day!
The life and achievements of Eric Ozario reflects a great success story! His contribution
to the Konkani language and culture is immensely valuable. His contribution has
been recognised worldwide.
Everybody loves success. People are happy when they succeed and get disappointed
when they fail. But the secret of success is that no success is everlasting and
no failure is permanent. A wise saying declares, “Success is for those energetic
enough to work for it, hopeful enough to look for it, patient enough to wait for
it, brave enough to seize it, and strong enough to hold it!” That has been the hallmark
of Eric Ozario’s incredible success as a musician, as a cultural activist and as
an organisor.
There are many good people in the society and most of them do good. Unfortunately,
many stop at the juncture of doing good to themselves! Only a few do good to others!
Ozario has made a difference in the Konkani world by his dedicated service to humanity.
May his leadership inspire many to “be ashamed to die until they have done something
for humanity!” Once again, congratulations Eric Ozario! May your tribe increase!

He is a pillar of Konkani culture
|
It is my immense pleasure to say our beloved Eric Ozario is completing 60th birthday
on May 18.
His activities to promote Konkani language and culture amid Konkani society are
amazing. After he bid good bye to the banking sector, he entered field of serving
the art choosing to work for Konkani music, through Mandd Sobhann. To promote Konkani
culture and language he organised Bhovnddi Yaatra and I have a pleasure to record
he was one of the main pillar of Vishwa Konkani Sammelan in 1995 at Mangalore.
He struggled to unite, extend, protect Konkani language and culture. He is a hero
of Guinness Book of World Record in Niranthari Konkani Sangeeth. I pray almighty
to grant him another 60 years to serve the Konkani people and its culture.
Hats off to him!

Congratulations Eric |
I know Eric since his childhood. His last 25 years of work for Konkani has proved
that he is a strong Konkani worker. His thinking is different. He is a true fighter
and has the capacity to reach the destination despite all opposition. At the same
time he is a good musician.
His life is full of struggle and he is a revolutionary thinker. He is fearless in
raising his voice to condemn the injustice in the society. He has fought many battles
so far.
The best part in his life is that his interest towards music gave a new shape to
his life. And the fame he has earned today is only due to Konkani music.
His contribution to Konkani music through his group, Mandd Sobhann is immense. Kalaangan
is one of the speaking example of his dedication, hardwork and go-getter approach.
He has created wonders for Konkani and Guinness World Record is one among them.
His other achievements are introduction of Konkani in school, Sodh, singing competition
and monthly theatre programmes at Kalaangan.
I congratulate Eric on his 60th birthday. I wish his Konkani mission will continue
with same zeal and enthusiasm. Wishing him and his family good health.

Eric is a unique personality
|
I feel very happy that Eric is celebrating 60th year of his life. Same time I wonder
how can he manage to work so fluently even at this age? As far as Konkani is considered
he is a great organizer. He is a man of courage and perfection. His thinking is
unique, his ways are different than a common man and he get it done perfectly that
an ordinary man can’t even think.
In his early life he raised his voice against the church and people called him a
revolutionary. Later on he entered the Konkani world without compromising his ethics
and today he has reached a milestone so that people can recognize him. Under his
leadership Maand Sobhaan came into existence, which is making wonders in Konkani
today. He took an initiative to build Kalaangan, gave a new dimension to Konkani
Sahithya Academy, registered Konkani’s name in Guinness World Record. God bless
him and hope his life will inspire others also.

Eric offered his life for Konkani
|
Eric is a special power and a bundle of talents. He is a unique gift of God as far
as Konkani is concerned. I feel that, God specially created him for the salvation
of Konkani. Because of his tough character he has reached the position where he
is today. I know him personally. I didn’t find any selfish motive in his thoughts
for Konkani, nor did he gain any monetary profit for his own use.
Eric is at the stage of 60 and he is growing old. What is the future of Kalaangan
after him? What will happen to Mandd Sobhann? May be such questions are there in
the minds of people. But I am full confident that, these organizations will not
decline because, Eric’s life has already inspired his followers and they gain enough
from him to continue the mission what he has started. I agree that, no one can replace
him because he is a bundle of multiple talents. But the members and well wishers
of Mandd Sobhann are gifted with one or the other talent to run the mission of Eric.

Eric Baab is a precious jewel of our community
|
Contribution of Eric Baab to our community is very great. It cannot be described
in words. He is a precious jewel of our community. Our future generation will remember
him dearly for what he did to promote Konkani language and culture.
Due to efforts of Eric Baab today Konkani is taught in the primary classes in our
state. In Kalaangan Konkani is nurtured. Little children, teenagers and youth are
trained in Konkani culture and tradition. I am sure due to this our rich culture
will be passed on to the next generation. So in today’s globalisation our rich tradition
and culture will be protected.
By organising Konkani Niranthari not only world record has been created, but all
Konkani speaking people of the world came together as the children of one Konkani
Mai. It is the organising capacity of Eric that made this happen, and we all feel
very proud of this world record.
I wish my friend Eric Baab Happy Diamond Birthday. May God give him good health
and happiness in the years to come.

You are a ‘gem’ of Konkani
|
Happy Birthday Eirc Baab. You are a " gem " of Konkani community. You are an institution
of Konkani.Today it is hard to find people working relentlessly for Konkani language
and culture. Your contribution to Konkani world is amazing and cannot be explained
in few words. May God shower his choicest blessings on you and keep you healthy.

We are lucky to have you Eric
|
Many happy returns of the day, dear Eric. Good wishes galore for your 60th birthday.
You have certainly spent more than half of your age for the cause of Konkani which
I am sure no one has ever done in our community. A straight forward person who calls
spade a spade is a very rare specimen to find these days in our society. We are
lucky to have you amongst us. May God grant you good health and many more years
with us as an ambassador of Konkani language and culture all over the world.

Diamond wishes to a super Konkani Hero!
|
In my life, I have come across a number of great people of different talent, name
and fame and none of them have ever shot up to limelight overnight. Great talent
that were nurtured by their sheer hardwork and determination made them very successful
in their respective fields. Konkani Vishv Kalaratn Eric Baab Ozario too is not an
exception to this rule.
He maintains a ‘never say die’ approach. He walked and walked straight into the
midst of problems and difficulties without staggering and came out colourful. For
him hardwork with common sense is success. Years back, I have seen him as a dynamic
union leader who really fought for the causes of others and today he is fighting
vigorously for the survival of Konkani language, culture and its heritage. His life
can be described as a “tryst with Konkani”.
This Konkani activist who is working hard to unite the great Konkani culture from
Kutch in Gujarat to Cochin in Kerala, is spending sleepless nights and struggling
to bring awareness about our dear mother tongue ‘Konkani’ filled with a rich heritage
and culture. A sweet language that survived many migrations, political oppressions
and cultural suppressions; today faces the threat of extinction. He is the diehard
promoter of ‘Kalaangan’ in Mangalore, the idea to preserve our rich Konkani heritage.
He believes in one simple philosophy that is “You cannot be successful in any endeavor
without believing that it is the greatest endeavour in the world. You have to put
your heart in the endeavour and the endeavour in your heart with a two word success
story: Work...Works.” Because of his dynamic leadership and immense determination
today, Konkani is boasting its place in the Guinness Book of World Records!
As this super Konkani Hero Eric Baab celebrates the Diamond Jubilee of his birth,
I wish him a long life, perfect health and the very best all in his endeavors. May
God Bless him and grant all his heart’s desires!

Rare and distinguished person |
We find many people working for Konkani in various ways. But, there are only a few
who are passionate and accordingly work for the allround development of the language.
Eric Ozario is gifted with such multiple talent. He created wonders for Konkani
and thereby Konkani people are saluting him for his efforts. I wish all the success
for his future work and heartfelt wishes on his 60th birthday.

All the best Eric Baab
|
I met Eric for the first time in 1986, he was just 37 then and a young soldier of
Konkani. Mandd Sobhann was formed and had just began its operations. With Late Cha
Fra’s company he gave a new dimension to Konkani music. Then they were facing serious
financial problems. Despite financial hurdles even then or for that matter today
he is not a person who will run after money. He has dedicated himself to Konkani
music, language and culture. Eric has the capacity to work for a particular cause
and stops his efforts only after reaching the final destination. Eric’s achievements
are far beyond imagination. I wish all his dreams will come true in the days to
come. All the best dear Eric Baab.

He is soft and straight
|
Eric is one among the greatest personalities I have seen in my life. He is honest,
soft, loyal, clean and straight. In fact he is innocent like a child when it comes
to family matters. As a grandfather he is great. He is perfect as a husband and
responsible as a father. He is a perfect family man.
When it comes to music he is a perfectionist. His songs are cool and touch the heart.
His dedication towards work, time management and discipline brought him success.
He admonishes me a several times when it comes to teaching music, but I accepted
it as a challenge, which helped me grow in my life. His passion towards work and
music inspires me.
His thinking is always right for it always has a reason. He puts in 100 percent
efforts in all his work. He never hides anything and speaks out what he wants to
deliver. He is devoid of cunningness.

I am a true Christian. I fight for justice – Eric Ozario
|
|
|
|
Interview by: Lloyd Rego and Richard D’Souza
|
|
|
|
|
|
Eric Ozario is not only a name, but a bundle of unique power. He is a man of perfection
and discipline. Time spent with Eric that would be one of the most memorable moments
of the life of a person for he has no airs, pretences or false stories to tell.
All what's there is purity of his heart, his true feelings. Moreover, he means what
he speaks. This great man is 60 now. From his busy schedule he dedicated some time
out to Mangaloremithr readers and shared his thoughts and feelings as he reached
the landmark of diamond jubilee celebration of his life. |
|
|
|
 |
You are 60 now. Tell us what are your feelings on this special occasion? |
|
|
Of course I am 60 now and it is not a big deal, not a milestone. A person's greatness
is not counted by his or her age. Moreover, till today I have not celebrated my
birthday. It’s just like any other day for me. However, this year my grandson is
receiving his Holy Communion on the day and a book on me too will be released. More
than anything else, my close friends wanted a celebration on this day and I have
consented respecting their wishes. I am very happy about my life. So far I have
not faced any major problems in my life. Hope the same will continue as long as
I live. I am not excited about it nor worrying about my age.
|
 |
From where does your strength stem from? |
|
|
There are certain hidden facts which have made me tough. I was born to a Bunt father
and a Poojary mother. It is their blood which runs in me.
Moreover, one's surroundings and external influences shape the personality. My childhood
was no bed of roses. As I am a neo-Christian, people were not ready to accept me.
They always tried to demoralise me. The Christian clergy converted us, but left
us midway. They neither taught us language, culture nor did they take us into their
fold. That’s the reason why I have a grievance against religious leaders. I also
oppose conversion vehemently.
The other fact is that, I spent my childhood in poverty. I experienced the problems
and humiliation of the lower classes. Even today the problems of the poor touch
my heart and I fight for them. If I have some money in hand, I am always happy to
share it with the poor who are in real need. To be very honest, I hate all these
higher class hypocrites.
Thus, certain facts like those mentioned above, made me a revolutionary. Also my
involvement in the Trade Union helped me. It has brought in values like dedication,
discipline and courage in me.
|
 |
You are accused of not practicing Christianity. What do you say? |
|
|
I am a true Christian. If anybody would question my Christianity, I will just ask
them to show me a better Christian. Christianity is not just attending mass every
Sunday, but to live life on path shown by Jesus. Fight for justice, do your work
with passion and dedication, help others… these things make you a true Christian.
I do not attend mass every Sunday because I don’t believe in such rituals. I have
led my whole life so far without any lure to seek profit, personal safety or self
gain. I truly believe in Christianity and try to live according to the preaching
of Christ. I have no regrets for fighting for justice and no qualms of conscience.
|
 |
What factors inspired you to work for Konkani? |
|
|
My early childhood was miserable. I suffered a lot as I did not know Konkani. Those
who converted me did not teach me the language. Everyone was mocking at my Konkani
which hurt me a lot. Soon therefore I chose English and mastered it.
But the Konkani legend, the great Cha Fra D’Costa changed my way of thinking. This
great man supported me a lot during my work in trade unions through his Konkani
magazine ‘Udev’. He was a true and realistic man and had a great passion for Konkani,
which changed my negative attitude towards the language. Soon I developed a positive
frame of mind about the language.
Since early years, music was one of my favourite subjects. Along with the company
of Cha Fra I started my work in Konkani Music. And today I am fully engaged in Konkani
music, language and culture.
|
 |
Are you happy about the response for all your hardwork in Konkani?
|
|
|
I do not feel bad about the ignorance of our own people with regard to Konkani language
and culture. Of course we are putting in a lot of effort to teach Konkani and promote
our culture. The behaviour of common man does not hurt me, but I hate the hypocrites,
who talk about Konkani's purity, but in reality are doing nothing for its development
or letting others do something for our great language.
To create awareness, we visited 10,361 houses and lighted the lamp of Konkani heritage.
If I get a second chance to visit, I will take a whip instead of a lamp, because
our people need to be awakened.
18 years of my life (the cream of my youth), I spent in the Trade Union movement.
And today I am in the field of promoting Konkani and this is my mission. The strength
is within you and no amount of money or power will give you that inner strength.
Take the example of Mahatma Gandhi, he was physically so weak, but he had such a
strong inner power which we all know. In the same way, as far as my mission is concerned
no obstacle will tire me or deter me from my goal.
I hate hypocrites who spread a false propaganda regarding my mission. Let these
hypocrites be warned that in the coming days, I will not take everything lying down.
|
 |
Some believe that, Eric has made money out of Konkani? What is your reply? |
|
|
If my goal was to make money, Konkani would be the last field I would have selected.
Like all my friends I could have gone to the Gulf and with my capacity, could have
been the vice president of any multi national company. I could have stuck to my
bank job and could have been the bank’s chairman. All that I have to say to people
who believe that I have made money is - “Do you know any one of my calibre who doesn’t
have a cheque book, a FD account, an ATM card, any securities or bonds, life insurance
or insurance of any kind, no credit or debit cards – but only loans?”. I have nothing
except a SB account in the SBI, Kankanady branch. I do hold a FD certificate of
Rs 50,000 gifted to me by my friend Roy Castelino which is due in 2011. Any one
in need can come and take it away from me.
It’s true, for Konkani, we have collected about Rs 5 crore under the banner of Mandd
Sobhann. I literally begged around for this money not for my personal use, but for
Konkani and Kalaangann.
I do not need any certificate from anybody to prove my genuinity or trustworthiness.
|
 |
People want you and Wilfy Rebimbus to work together. What do you say? |
|
|
Wilfy Rebimbus is a genius. I have the greatest respect for him and it will continue
as long as I live. People like to gossip. They would like me to pit me against him
and watch the fun. If they say that we should unite, I ask them what they have done
to unite us? He is doing his work and I am doing mine. I would like to state in
all sincerity that I am a big fan of Wilfy. And that’s that. |
 |
Could you name ten people who are most valuable to you in your life so far? |
|
|
1. Joyce Fontes (Ozario) – who has stood by me through thick and thin.
2. Jerry Fronteiro – my trade union guru, who instilled in me the love of the down
trodden.
3. Cha Fra Baab D’Costa – my Konkani guru, who converted me from the English ‘Saul’
to the Konkani ‘Paul’
4. Lawrence Pinto – my comrade-in-arms, who has fought many a battle alongside me.
5. John Gibson – my ‘Man-Friday’, whom I converted from a soldier of the priests
to a soldier of the oppressed.
6. Dr. Fr. John Fernandes – my spiritual guru, who has protected me in difficult
circumstances and bailed me out of tragic situations.
7. Louis J Pinto – my strength, my brain, my alter ego. Without him, I wouldn’t
have achieved anything in Konkani.
8. Stany Alvares – a true companion and a disciple. A companion of all my ventures
and adventures.
9. Roy Castelino – a true admirer, who believed in me and in my dreams. His trust
in me has been greatly responsible for the realisation of the Kalaangann dream.
10. Ronald Colaco – my greatest support. In sharing what one has, he is my greatest
inspiration.

Milestones in Eric’s 60 years of life journey |
|
|
• Born on May 18, 1949 in Jeppu, Mangalore to late Prospero Ozario and late Bernadetha
Ozario.
• Late Prospero Ozario was a suprano singer, the factor that introduced music into
Eric's life.
• For his first holy communion his shorts were stitched out of his brother’s pants.
He was disappointed of not getting to wear new clothes for the special occasion.
• In his childhood he was humiliated on the grounds of language and on the identity
of him being a converted Christian. This in turn made him a revolutionary thinker
• His neighbour Pavla bai was very fond of songs. When Eric used to frequent her
shop and sing songs, she always rewarded young Eric a handful of peanuts.
• He was ill-treated by the Malayalis in the seminary and as a mark of rebellion
he secured highest marks in English.
• He secured a job in Karnataka Bank by directly approaching bank’s general manager.
• His first love was a failure and he blames it to his poverty.
• On Dec 29, 1974 he got married to Joyce Fonthes.

• He undertook fasting as a mark of protest demanding reinstatement of nine workers
of Fr Muller Hospital. Meanwhile, All India Bishop’s conference too was being held
in Jeppu Seminary at the time. The religious leaders played loud music to prevent
bishops from hearing the voice of the protestors. They also arranged a group of
40 people under the leadership John Gibson. On the third day, a bishop came out
on his Mercedes car. Eric stopped his car and tried to explain the situation. But
he was not ready to hear. Eric was unable to control his nerve and fumed at the
bishop, who was the representative of Pope. Later due to dome dramatic developments
the workers got back their job
• He came in to contact with Cha Fra during Fr Muller incident. Cha Fra was a journalist,
who then had to his credit some revolutionary articles in magazine ‘Udev’

Eric: God’s gift to Konkani world
|
|
|
-Lloyd A Rego and Geo D’Silva
|
|
|
Eric Ozario is named as The Moses of Konkani. The universe has recognised this untiring
personality, bows to him with reverence for his dedicated and committed visionary
works for the growth of Konkani.
Eric is synonymus with Mandd Sobhann, Mandd Sobhann with Kalaangan and Kalaangan
with Guinness World Record. Thus they are intertwined. If at all we have someone
who is dedicated and committed with selfless motto and a disciplined worker it is
the hero Eric and his team Mandd Sobhann. Eric is the power behind the achievements
and recognition of Konkani in the world map.
A revolutionary, the “RED”, the team leader of strikes, agitations, anti-priests,
the stylish English showman, a bank employee and what not were his depicted public
representations. Could anyone have imagined that a“bad boy” one day would become
messiah of Konkani?
Eric himself is an unanswered question for all of us. He is a big question mark
to Konkani, to the family, to his friends and may be to the almighty also. His birth
itself is the gift to our society; he is a wonder to anyone who meets him and a
friend to an unknown too. He is such a versatile personality and has contributed
a great deal to Konkani. Herebelow is our simple effort to provide a bird's eye
view of his Konkani mission.
ERIC AND PARADELA
We are happy to provide you the gist from the memories of Melwin Pereira, Bejai,
a founder member of Paradela.
There was a group of youth at Bejai who were ever ready, energetic, just and straight
in talks and thoughts, but were branded negatively. The open dialogue, loud thinking
about the injustice of the religious leaders forced the youth group to hang around
just outside the church compound. When they gathered together and chatted one among
them fished out a lovely German word for the team, PARADELA means “prince of queens”.
Eric was very much associated with the group as almost all the friends of Eric were
from Bejai.
The members were talented youth, either the artistes, poets, musicians or singers.
Eric as we know a master of all became the star of the gang. Joel Pinto’s house
was utilised for practices. New melodious numbers were written, composed and tuned
beautifully. Thus the Paradela Nites in the 1979-80 became the talk of the town.
But Eric’s nature was open, straight and unbiased. Naturally that was hurting. Personal
issues cropped up and the members chose different directions both for personal reasons
and for the future.
ERIC AND RANG TARANG
From the Paradela pack Eric stumbled before Cha Fra, a legend. When they talked
and walked together, Eddie Sequiera, an eminent dramatist joined the stalwarts.
Cha Fra’s lyrics, Eric’s singing and Eddie’s dramas put together, three great talent
founded the Rang Tarang Geetmala, in the year 1982. Eddie could not stick on for
long for personal reasons but the duo Cha Fra and Eric rowed the Rang Tarang with
best efforts, but it could not survive. However, the unity between the duo remained
strong.
ERIC AND HIS BOSNI
By birth Eric is a talent. A positive spirited visionary. He invited few new friends
to his house. Lawrence Pinto, Cha Fra, Stella D Coasta, Manohar Pais, Melwin Rodrigues,
Victor D’Silva, Melwin Pereira and others sat in a circle, and Eric monitored the
songs, seated in the centre. That looked nice. This was a new welcome move in the
monotonous way of standing and delivering the songs. This way of presentation was
named in Konkani as BOSNI.
The first such presentation was sponsored by Harry Lobo, Bejai and hoisted at Anegundi
under a peeple tree, and then there was no looking back for Eric.
Eric is simple but hardcore thinker. He thinks differently. When others think he
performs. And when others perform he achieves.
He is short tempered, arrogant and disciplined. That’s why many think in negative
about him and his plans. But this special character of his personality has brought
laurels to him today. He is a silent Good Samaritan. He only knows to give if he
has, share with the needy but never has a nature to grab and accumulate.
Eric is a comrade, a fighter and a single man army. His endeavours have wiped off
the tears of beedi rollers, the Presbyterians, Fr Muller workers and the church
bridles. He never used his achievements or platforms or organisations for his selfish
gains or for his growth. Only Eric is an alternative to Eric himself.
ERIC AND MANDD SOBHANN
It is Eric who has given an unique identity to Konkani and a different direction
to Konkani music through Mandd Sobhann. There was a time that only Wilfy’s musical
nights were hits and well-accepted by the public. Wilfy was the pride of Konkani
community. Eric thought of giving a new dimension to Konkani music and tradition.
He thought of reviewing the traditional practices, the culture and thus give a new
meaningful existence to music. All this he could achieve only through Mandd Sobhann.
It was the aim of Eric to pass on the Konkani culture in its original form to the
new generation and this dream of Eric was turned into reality by Mandd Sobhann,
founded by Eric along with other founder members Cha Fra and Melwin Rodrigues. The
journey since then has been remarkable. Hats off to Eric and Mandd Sobhann.
ERIC’S DREAM: THE KALAANGAN
Dec 2, 2001 is a day to note in the history of Konkani world. The Kalaangan, part
I was dedicated to the Konkani community, on this day.
Konkani language, songs, music, culture, tradition, folklore-lokveda, customs and
practices, poetry, literature and to learn the Konkani dialects, conduct research,
treasure them and enrich the same the Kalaangan was set up.
Kaalangan is not built with money but with the participation of people. Late Thomas
Castelino and his family donated about half an acre of land at Makale to set up
the centre. To keep alive the memories of late Cha Fra a "Talent School" is set
within the Kalaangan, for trainings and adequate hall. Open amphitheatre,
library, collection of traditional treasured items, dining hall, kitchen, meeting
hall and a lovely ambiance are the pride and a landmark of Kalaangan forever.
Nov 30, 2008, the part II of Kalaangan was set up. The administrative block, research,
record room, hostel facilities, guest rooms, terrace theatre all this and more was
the brain child of Eric now transformed into a temple of Konkani.
If there was any programme in Konkani recognised at the universal level it is none
other than “Konkani Niranthari” with 1,711 singers, 44 groups, non stop 40 hours
singing all in the premises of Kalaangan on Jan 26 and 27, 2008. The performance
has brought laurels and has been recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The man behind the whole achievement was the untiring ERIC. 87 stage performances
up till April 2009 were organised continuously without any break at Kalaangan. Artistes
from Mangalore, Goa, Mumbai, Gulf, Karwar, Bhatkal and such other places were recognised
and the efforts to coordinate them, make them deliver quality stuff was only because
of Eric.
Yuva Mahotsvs were organised four times at Kalaangan to bring the youth together
and introduce the taste of Konkani culture and language. Every year external drama
troupe of repute, eg Neenasam have performed at Kalaangan. Different types of training
for children, teaching and learning of Konkani, musical orientation, workshops for
Siddies (A tribe speaking Konkani) and such other programmes have created a festive
gathering almost every week at every function and this has been brought to life
by Eric at Makale.

THE KONKANI ACADEMY AND ERIC
|
|
|
Eric is dashing, foresighted and untiring worker. He put in efforts to bring Konkani
into the 8th schedule of the Constitution along with that of Msgr Alexander D’Souza
and Basti Vaman Shenoy. Eric’s agitations, follow-up yielded fruits and Konkani
is today recognised constitutionally.
When the demand for Academy was dreamt, Eric struggled to make the dream a reality.
And he materialised it too.
Through the Academy the Konkani literature and art was given monetary support but
had not implemented any schemes and programmes in an effective way at all. There
was a lot to do. Eric filed the application for the presidentship of the Academy.
There were lobbies against him depicting that he is not a writer or a poet. He never
cared for the arguments against him. Soon he got appointed and began functioning
in a great speed.
He headed the Academy from 2005 to Aug 2008. He got 20 books published during the
term, which is a record.
The noteworthy works among those are, A Konkani-English dictionary compiled by Stephen
Quadras, Konkani personalities in golden Karnataka (Fr Richard Rego), Konkani stories
in the 20th Century (Valley Quadras), Konkani Poetry in the 20th Century (Melwin
Rodrigues). 3 CDs/Cassettes were also released.
Introduction of Konkani in primary schools was another great achievement of Eric.
In the first year Konkani was taught out of the syllabus and from 2007 the government
approved the syllabus to be taught within the curriculum. From 20 different places
about 40 great personalities of Konkani were recognised and honoured for their services.
At six different places an opportunity for Konkani poets to perform was provided.
During 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 academy recognition programmes were organised.
Konkani future, Konkani recognition day, Konkani children’s day, Konkani awareness,
Konkani Bazar are some of the programmes and venture undertaken. More than 12 workshops
on traditional song/marriage songs were organised. Convention of Kudumi tribe, recognition
of Konkani artistes, initiation to provide incentives to Konkani artistes, orientations
on copyrights, folklore and poets' meet are some of the programmes organised by
Eric through Academy to unite people, build people and preserve the language and
culture.

Konkani is richer. Thanks to her sons like Eric!

When my friend Lloyd called me up that Eric Ozario turns 60 on May 18 and requested
me to write a piece on my impressions from my association with him, I sat down to
recall our association. And, I was surprised to realise that I had known him for
almost four decades. Not that I was close to him or was his bosom buddy. But our
paths did cross on many occasions. I was quite active in the Mangalore Diocese’s
Catholic Youth Movement (CYM), which has now transformed into ICYM, in the late
sixties during my college days. And, Eric was quite active in the Young Christian
Workers (YCW) movement, which had just been started in the Diocese then. We could
be described as rivals, mind you not enemies! Those who are familiar with the CYM
and YCW activities in the parishes and at the Diocesan level in those days will
vouch for that.
I strayed into journalism, moving from newspaper to newspaper, while Eric took his
bank job and was quite active in trade union activities. I remember his role in
the strike by the employees of St Joseph’s workshop at Jeppu and Fr Muller Hospital,
Kankanady, and, to be honest, had my own strong reservations. Also, I was acquainted
with Late C F D’Costa, popular as Cha.Fra D'costa, who used to reside in Kulshekar,
and many others with whom he was closely associated.
Though I left Mangalore for a brief stint in Dubai and finally settled down in Bangalore,
I was familiar with his activities. But I can’t pinpoint when he took up the cause
of Konkani, the language, culture, folk art and music, as his life’s mission. True,
we did meet on and off over the years, and distinctly remember our meeting when
he embarked on his Bhovnddi to spread awareness about Konkani.
I am happy to recall my close association with Eric during his three-year stint
as Chairman of Karnataka State Konkani Sahithya Academy, when by a strange coincidence
or can I say providence I was nominated by the State government as a member. It
was during this period that the long-felt desire of all Konkani speaking people,
especially those in Karnataka, to see their mother-tongue being taught in schools
as a third optional language became a reality. Though I did my bit in persuading
the powers-that-be through my close contacts with key leaders cutting across party
lines and top officials by virtue of my position as a journalist based in Bangalore,
I have no hesitation to state that it was Eric’s tireless efforts, groundwork, zeal
and commitment that clinched the issue despite the many obstacles.
He even tried his best to unite Konkani speaking people from different castes and
religions as also those speaking the language in myriad dialects and also bring
about standardisation in the way we write Konkani. While it is for others to make
an objective assessment of the Academy’s performance under Eric’s stewardship, it
must be acknowledged that the Academy did exceedingly well (even though I say so
myself) as compared to the record of his more illustrious predecessors like late
V J P Saldanha, Basti Vaman Shenoy, B V Baliga or Monsignor Fr A F D’Souza.
I don’t want to write about Eric’s role, contribution and achievements in propagating
Konkani music, folk art and culture or the more celebrated achievements in promoting
Baila, Manddo Mandd Sobhann or in establishing Kalaangan and last but not the least
in ensuring Konkani’s place in the Guinness Book of World Records by being the guiding
spirit or chief organiser of the Konkani Niranthari programme because many others
who have worked more closely with him in those endeavours or have observed quite
closely might be better qualified to do so.
One may have serious differences and disagree with Eric on several issues. But nobody
can deny his commitment and dedication for the cause of Konkani. All Konkani people
should justifiably feel proud of his laudable achievements. I do admire, appreciate
and applaud Eric for what he has been able to do and achieve. All of us have our
own angularities, weaknesses and strengths. We are what we are. Our personalities
are shaped mostly by our peculiar circumstances and prevailing environment over
which we have little or no control. It is in overcoming the odds stacked against
us, utilising the talents bestowed on us and contributing our mite that we seek
fulfillment. I personally feel Eric has performed excellently and can rest his oars
on his achievements, if he so wishes. Hats off to Eric!
As Eric turns 60, what more can we expect from him? It is said humans begin their
second childhood after 60, because one never knows how long one gets to live. As
Eric, by the grace of almighty, enjoys good health, I am sure he will become older
like all of us (I know he has already become a grandpa) and more distinguished and
continue his mission for Konkani. But, if given a second chance to go back in time
and start all over again, I am sure he would like to leave out some of the rough
edges and continue to do what his dear to his heart.
May he continue to enjoy good health and carry on with his mission with renewed
zeal and vigour for many more years to come. Konkani will be poorer if she didn’t
have sons like Eric. Or, more accurately, Konkani has become richer because of the
contributions of her sons like Eric.

He is a true leader
|
|
|
Eric Ozario is a selfless, honest, sincere and dedicated worker of Konkani. I have
never seen a person so committed and working so selflessly for the cause of a language.
He is a fulltime Konkani crusader and there is no one like him in Konkani now. Though
there are many who work for the benefit of language, culture, literature etc. for
them this is a part-time hobby. People like me who have one or the other profession
cannot leave their profession, and work for a social cause without any financial
gain yet, it is amazing to see Eric, who left his lucrative job in a bank and dedicated
himself for Konkani. When he was bestowed with Konkani Kutam award and was given
cash of Rs 50,000, he already had plans to spend that amount for Konkani without
even bothering to repair his old two-wheeler!
He is very clear in his goal and due to this he is able to achieve what he perceives.
I have seen him working during Vishwa Konkani Sammelan organised in Mangalore. I
was near him in his tenure as the president of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademi
and I am closely associated with him in his mission to teach Konkani in schools.
He is a blend of several virtues- excellent leadership qualities, perfect as an
organiser, realistic as a dreamer, perfectionist in achievements. His organisational
skills were revealed during the Vishwa Konkani conference. Though there are many
who claim the credit for the success, it is Eric Ozario’s vision and selfless work,
that made the late Mr. B.V. Baliga exclaim that such a conference ‘na bhutho, na
bhavishyathi’ (was not held before will not be in future). The same is true in Kalaangan.
About 10 years ago who could have ever imagined that the barren land in Shaktinagar
could be transformed into a prestigious centre for the preservation of Konkani culture.
Eric Ozario’s contribution to Konkani music in particular and Konkani language in
general is astonishingly great. He is the first person to identify various groups
of people who use Konkani and it is he who gave identity to many of them. He went
deep into their cultural heritage and arranged several occasions for them to perform
their arts. He arranged to pay for them to perform their arts so that other people
recognise that it is the richness of our language. As a perfect organiser, he has
organised so many programmes successfully and has tried his best to uplift Konkani
in all its spheres. Through Kalaangan all types of Konkani arts-music, drama, folklore
are presented. The monthly manchi programme is an excellent occasion for the artistes
to perform.
Eric Ozario has a trusted team of friends who are with him in his every venture.
It is again a surprise to see this band of few, under the leadership of Mr Louis
Pinto and in the company of Stany Alvares who are part of Eric’s success, as he
is not an easy person to understand and work with. At times you find him so obsessed
with the task he undertakes, it is not easy to keep pace with him. He does not mind
expressing his displeasure at any time, in any situation. The people who can understand
Eric are the only ones who can work with him. The credit of the success of Kalaangan,
Konkani Niranthari and several other programmes go to his trusted team in Mandd
Sobhann. Eric has a pure heart, a clear mind and never accumulates hatred. If he
has ever opposed someone it is always based on issues. Unfortunately many people
are not able to understand him.
I had some differences with him when he was in association with certain people who
had vested interests in Konkani. This difference was on issues and we had no animosity.
When he was chosen as the president of Karnataka Konkani Sahithya Academy, the true
picture of the people whom he supported and elevated as leaders of Konkani was revealed.
As we had to work for the benefit of Konkani we joined hands together and have worked
in Konkani Prachar Sanchalan for teaching Konkani in schools. I admire him as a
true leader, a selfless and honest Konkani lover. Because of him Konkani has gained
a lot, but what Eric has received in return from the Konkani society is very little.

Louis Pinto is the man behind any Konkani programme organised by Eric or Mandd Sobhann.
He is a great strength in himself. There is a saying where there is an angel there
is a halo and where there is an individual there is a shadow. The proverb suits
perfectly when it comes to Eric and Louis. We have an abstract of what exactly Louis
has seen in Eric, the inner confession.
We think together, plan and act jointly. The focus has clarity and therefore in
the last 30 years there was no misunderstanding between us. We also have a clear
understanding of our role in the togetherness and neither of us interfere in others
business.
Our story began in the year 1986. We were planning a public show of Rang Tarang
Geetmala, headed by Eric. When I contacted him he spoke straight and to the point
and requested me to include few songs of Wilfy Rebimbus, if the programme required
that needed impact. The thinking was loud and clear and other artistes such as Claud,
Melwin Peris, Eric and others made the said show a memorable one. The last song
had about 35 spot sponsors and Eric clearly declared that the song should be of
Wilfy.
Eric’s selfless character impressed me. I decided to work with him and there was
no looking back since then. I picked up responsibilities at Mandd Sobhann and just
did what is good for all of us and Konkani in specific.
Eric is short tempered but for the purpose. He is straight forward and voices against
injustice. He never deals with money or greedy for the same. He does not involve
himself in religious activities, which I usually do. Still there were no personal
discussions on these.
He is a revolutionary. Many do not like him but his objective is clear, that needs
acceptance. He speaks what he practically is able to do. He never cares for money
and he cannot manage it too because money never stays with him. He spends if he
has his personal cash or he always open to demand his friends for the same.
Public has contributed Rs 4,00,000 for Kalaangan through Eric. But to date he has
never asked me calculations of any sort. Moreover, he is being paid only Rs 3,500
per month for his services. All money matters rests with the treasurer. There were
no financial deals by me with Eric nor he expects the same from me. He is probably
the first person I have seen who is happy without money.

Stany Alvares is known as the right hand of Eric and has been there with him in
all his endeavours. Working for Mandd Sobhann under the mentorship of Louis and
Eric is my good fortune, remarks Stany. The close association of the two has brought
about many a remarkable incidents.
We came in contact with one another about 22 years back, through Denis Monteiro.
I was a fan of Eric’s songs. We both were sailing on the same boat, jobless, having
similar tastes and have a great love for people. If Eric had Rs 500 with him he
would call me for a dinner with him. The bond soon thickened and we became friends.
He is the same even today. He is a unique person to maintain friendship and relation.
Every dark cloud has a silver lining and possibly the vice-versa. Eric has his hot
temper. But this trait was the stepping stone for his success. I have been with
him in his tour- Padayatra- and I admire his strength and will power. It could be
his trade union background that has made him so. I have learnt a lot from him as
he is my inspiration.
He is a straight forward man and does not even know that he would hurt some due
to his blunt talks. He is impartial and treats both family members and artistes
in the same manner during the practice session. We have our share of misunderstanding
and fights, but in minutes we compromise understanding each ones limitations. So
till today our friendship has grown deeper and deeper.
He has toured and collected donations for Kalaangan, but never kept the money himself
or asked for any details. As a treasurer the amount was straight away coming to
my kitty and the accounts to Louis Pinto for further action. I simply revere Eric
for what he is and his achievements. The Konkani Mai is proud to have a son like
Eric.

It is good to read all that Eric has achieved for Konkani. Eric and I had our diffrences but we know each other well. So I do sincerely wish him well in all his endevours. But then I found my name mentioned in the article and also noticed the error in one of the details the writer has mentioned that is
ERIC AND RANG TARANG
”From the Paradela pack Eric stumbled before Cha Fra, a legend. When they talked and walked together, Eddie Sequiera, an eminent dramatist joined the stalwarts. Cha Fra’s lyrics, Eric’s singing and Eddie’s dramas put together, three great talent founded the Rang Tarang Geetmala, in the year 1982. Eddie could not stick on for long for personal reasons but the duo Cha Fra and Eric rowed the Rang Tarang with best efforts, but it could not survive. However, the unity between the duo remained strong.”
But for the record I would like to clarify that I was the one who started Rang-Tarang and it was Eric who joined later.
In the late seventies I was coming up as a good dramatist as an actor and later as a Director. I met Chafra during that time and for many years our union produced few good memorable plays. He liked my Direction. I liked his plays. Almost daily we used to meet in my office talking, discussing, about Konkani, poetry, plays, journalism etc.
